Even if it’s only in your own mind and imagination, once you begin writing a story the characters exist somewhere. And you are one who brought them into existence.
If they develop and grow into characters that readers connect with and actually get to know, it will be due to your decision to give them the room to become characters with depth, personalities and life.
Conversely, if they are flat, inconsistent and not worth remembering…it is because you spent the entire time telling them who they were going to be instead of listening to who they actually were.
